I've been happily working on wedding invitations for a VIP who contacted me with a request. One thing lead to another and I am off in this new direction.

Image Transfer to Fabric 101

I have enjoyed creating and selling digital downloads since late 2009. Over this short period of time I have had contact with many customers who use art to create their own designs. One question is asked of me over and over and over.

“How do you transfer images to fabric?”

I have been on this information quest myself and have found a few helpful links that I will share in this post. This is not a tutorial Per se but a synopsis of the information that is out there on the web to save you time and maybe money.

1) I think most use the Iron-on transfer sheets ~ see the following links

I have tried this method and it is my opinion that it requires a commercial heat press to achieve a good result.

2) Print directly on the fabric ~ see the following links

This is the method I use with my Epson R1900

You cannot use this method for *burlap

I currently offer my designs printed on linen or twill in my TatteredNotions shop

I want to try this but I haven’t yet. I think that this may be a good way to print on *burlap.

Some of my customers use this method for *burlap with a nice result. I have not tried it myself but I really like the idea. My assessment is success with this method depends mainly on being able to keep the paper from slipping during the transfer process.

Other traditional ways to apply designs to fabric are painting, stamping and stenciling. Please share any related links in your comments.

First Tutorial Waterslide Decals Pink Chic Emblem no. 208

I used the clear Papilio Aqua-Slide-Paper in my ink-jet color printer to print Tattered Vintage Download no 208

After applying the aerosol fixative and letting it dry for one hour I cut out the two middle sized emblems to decorate my vintage coffee jar filled with lace notions.

Then I soaked the decals one at a time in a cereal bowl of warm water til the design started to separate from the backing paper.

I placed the entire decal on the jar lid to position it and carefully slid the backing from behind the decal.

I used a rubber squeegee to remove the bubbles (very gently).

Then I repeated the process for the front of the jar.

I wish I could say I found this antique dress form at a Barn sale in the countryside but we don't have those around here ... I truly found her at a garage sale this past weekend. She is at home in my studio now:)

The Real Deal

A new product I have wanted to do for a long while ... now that it's not freezing cold in my studio I will be spending some time making wall art again. This is an 18" x 24" artist canvas papered with antique wallpaper from my collection. Yesterday DH found something he wanted on craigslist so I went with on a little afternoon outing thinking I might find a little antique shop filled to the brim with paper goods visions of ephemera danced in my head, instead I found this pretty tattered pink window and I had just the spot for it on a narrow wall in our breakfast room. I know there are many wonderful things that one could do with this but I like it as found. My DH frets about the crack in the glass and the peeling paint...

What would you do?

Today I visited a favorite junkin spot and found five pretty matching English ironstone transferware tea cups sans saucers a crochet pot holder and a sunny yellow vintage enamelware pot, this inspired me to do a little primpin in my kitchen. See the before and after. xo

A reader requested pictures of the magazines I refer to in my profile so I took some pics of Country Living magazine and the Victoria tear sheets (I couldn't find my copy with the pretty Cynthia Hart cover).

I took pictures of the burgundy rose box next to the magazine shot but my lighting was not as good. My workshop now is my computer it takes up all my spare time but I'm really loving it.

A Glimpse

I have been encouraged by blogging friends to post more. I'm a little shy about sharing this way .. here's a glimpse. The top picture is of a fancy chandelier in my ten year old son's room, we live in a rental so there was not much I could do to ease his angst over the fancy girlie light fixture. I hung his baby shoes and he seems to like it better.

The next is of tattered things in my room taken when I laid down for a nap a few days ago. On my one side there's a hard working guy just home from work (see why I gave up on white). On the other side is a small desk top with my mother's bible ~ she went home to be with Jesus a year ago this past October.

In this picture it is laying on top of a bandbox I made in the early 90's this very box was photographed by Luciana Pampalone for the 93 Victoria article and I kept it because it had a flaw on the back;) xo

New tattered edge sheet that I'm kind of partial to ~ these roses are gorgeous! I'm really loving the texture or tattered edges. I hope they are useful to my artist customers because I think I'll be doing this style more often now.

A Happy Child

Debate about how we celebrate Christmas, economy and shopping lists aside, I have been reminded of a wonderful blessing I do not deserve, a happy child.

My son is 10. His older sisters were here for Thanksgiving and have other plans for Christmas this year. Our friends are out-of-town visiting family. Our families are too far away for visiting this year. I have been 'woe-is-me'ing. Thankfully my son doesn’t seem to have inherited this temperament trait from me. Even though there is not one wrapped package under our tree he is cheerful and excited about little things, snow, the cat playing, French toast, taking a break from homeschool, etc…

There will be packages.

Christmas is one way we Christians remember the ultimate gift that was given for us.

I started my fascination with old wallpaper nearly two decades ago. I have done a little research on it in the past so as I started this post a couple of days ago, (it has taken me that long to delete all the extra characters my keyboard adds) I went to this 1880 article to source the discourse I had planned but my memory failed me it wasn't the right article:(

I have several other books and articles but I'll save that for another day maybe when I can replace this silly laptop.

Tattered Notions

I am an idea person most of my ideas are eventually shredded literally or by circumstance. Sometimes I try to suppress them. I recall a scene in A Beautiful Mind when John says “I’ve learned not to indulge certain appetites…like dreams… “, however; I do not have this control. My husband recently explained it very eloquently to our son. “Mommy is all about good ideas”.

As of late many women entrepreneurs in the Home & Garden trade have suffered in the economic downturn, myself included. As we were in the process of shutting down our store a registered letter arrived from Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic™ the letter was to inform me that we had lost our dealer status due to lack of volume of sales required for stocking dealers. I can’t remember exactly what it said I immediately tossed it but I should have saved it, because only weeks later I read that Shabby Chic™ was shutting down. I was happy to see Rachel’s blog post regarding the re-opening of two stores.

During the past many months notions of my new identity “Tattered” have taken many forms. Where should I begin again? Wholesale, Etsy, Ebay, Zazzle …. too many product ideas to recount. Hopefully posting some of them will bring clarity.

Vintage Tattered

Tattered was mainstream in the depression era ~ women like my grandmothers made beautiful scrap quilts from pieces of clothing and feedsacks, building contractors used salvaged brick to build the most elegant of homes at least as late as the early 40's. We currently live in such a cottage.

Tattered Chic

I dreamed of tattered before it was chic, since before I saw pictures of Ralph Lauren's skirts made from old quilt tops, I think it was early 70's Seventeen magazine (yes I'm over 50). Since then many designers known and unknown have romanced "the tattered look" and have claimed it in one way or another.

So what's the attraction? Why does a fragment of vintage fabric with faded roses and faded denim make us happy? I have a theory.

Most of us can’t afford homes, decor and apparel portrayed in magazines, store windows or in advertisements. We have created in our dreams or in our reality a style that seems attainable. It has many faces some think of it as Romantic Country or Flea Market Chic some prefer a more elegant look and call it Paris Flea Market or English Country and various other forms of tattered. Designers capitalize on it. Now you can buy it at Target but something is lost in translation.

The purest form of tattered includes something old that time has perfectly patterned its own design over. It gives us a sense of ownership ancestry and belonging.
